Urban Eden Community Garden, a 2017 Strong Roots Award winner, has its roots on Milwaukee’s near west side. Founded in 2009 by members of Central United Methodist Church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Marquette University Students for an Environmentally Active Campus, and Neighborhood House International Learning Program, Urban Eden was intended as a place of peace and beauty in the city where people from different walks of life could work and grow together. This garden and community grew through the work of many willing and talented hands coming together to build raised beds, generate compost, plant an orchard, share knowledge, grow food, flowers and good will. When you walk through this place and find a spear of asparagus poking up, berries in the hedgerow, ripe apples and cherries in the sun, a proud red shed, or rich black soil in a raised mound, let it be a reminder of what can arise when people collaborate with each other on shared land, with respect and gratitude for those who came before and those who will care for it in the future.
